1931: The Miracles' "Shop Around" becomes Motown Record's first million-selling single. It was the label's first #1 hit on Billboard's R&B singles chart, also reaching #2 on the Hot 100. In the following ten years, The Miracles will have six more million sellers.

1967: The Turtles release their biggest hit, "Happy Together", which will reach #1 in the US and #12 in the UK. Co-written by Garry Bonner and Alan Gordon, the song had been rejected by several other performers.

1958: Frank Sinatra's "Come Fly With Me" rose to the top of the Billboard album chart, where it would stay for the next five weeks. At the inaugural Grammy Awards in 1959 the LP was nominated for Album Of The Year, but lost to Henry Mancini's "The Music from Peter Gunn".

1964: The Beatles made their first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, which was watched by over 73 million people (60% of the viewing audience). The Fab Four performed "All My Loving", "Till There Was You", "She Loves You", "I Saw Her Standing There" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand". Also performing on the show is a future member of The Monkees, Davy Jones, who appeared as part of the cast of Oliver.

1958: The Diamonds had the best selling record in the United States with their version of "The Stroll". The song also reached number four on the Billboard Pop chart and number five on the R&B chart.
