1972: Curtis Mayfield's LP, "Super Fly" goes Gold as it tops the Billboard Hot 200 album chart on the strength of the title track and "Freddie's Dead". The album is one of the few soundtracks to out-gross the film it accompanied.

1987: Bob Seger's "Shakedown" hits #1 on the US Pop singles chart. The song would be nominated for both the Academy Award for Best Original Song and Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song, but lost both to Dirty Dancing's "(I've Had) The Time of My Life".

1971: James Taylor scored his only Billboard number one record with the Carole King written, "You've Got A Friend". The song would go on to win the 1971 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male.

1988: Former member of The Spencer Davis Group and Traffic, Steve Winwood had the number 1 song in the US this week with "Roll With It". It stayed at the top for four weeks, making it the number one song of the year. In the UK however, the record stalled at #53. Winwood's next release, "Don't You Know What the Night Can Do?" also made it into the US Top Ten, while the following singles, "Holding On" and "One and Only Man" cracked the Top Twenty.
